title: grove context
description: Print the grove context this directory resolves to, its project, variant, slug, and hostname, as text or as the JSON other tools read.
---

```sh
grove context [--json]
```

The context is derived from the git worktree you are standing in, and names the hostname, database, and ports grove allocates. `GROVE_CONTEXT_OVERRIDE` replaces it.

`--json` is the stable contract other tools should read. `is_main` marks the context that is the project itself, which is the main clone where there is one and a worktree of a bare repository where there is not. [Contexts and naming](/concepts/contexts) says how each field is decided.

## Flags
